The Pact

“So, where are Felix and Milo?” Darius asks.

I guess it’s okay that he just now noticed they weren’t here. I mean… we were a little distracted.

“Tiffany called Felix in to work.” I huff. “I don’t know where Milo is.”

“Neither one of them was at your party?”

“No.”

“Citrine, I’m so sorry. I can’t believe they weren’t there, especially Felix.”

“What do you mean, especially Felix? Tiffany called, so he answered. She is his boss after all.”

I cross my arms and look away. Felix would never go for Tiffany, would he? He avoided her for years. Now that she’s his boss, he can’t avoid her, but she’s taking advantage of the fact that he’s trying to be a good employee. And he’s letting her.

“Citrine, Felix has liked you as much as I have since the second week he was at school. We talked about you all the time. We made a pact…” Dare grimaces.

“A pact? What kind of pact?”

Mikey makes an uh oh face and gets off of the couch. He leans against the fireplace and pulls out his phone. I know he’s still listening, but I appreciate the attempt to appear otherwise.

Darius runs his hand through his hair and stands up.

“Well…Felix and I made a pact that was…well…”

“Spit it out, Dare.”

“Basically, if we couldn’t have you, then no one could…” He avoids my gaze and crosses the room.

Mikey whistles. “I’ve got to take this call. I’ll be outside.” He swiftly exits the room, leaving me alone with Darius.

“I’m sorry… What did you say?”

“It was a stupid pact. We were jealous high school boys.”

“Let me see if I’ve got this straight. I went my whole high school career thinking that there was something undateable about me, all because you two meatheads made a dumb pact to scare all the other guys away?”

Darius nods.

“So, when Chris Delvecchio asked me to prom junior year and then suddenly changed his mind the week before, that was you and Felix?”

Another nod.

“And when Luca Moreno started sitting with us at lunch and then out of the blue, decided to sit elsewhere?”

“That was us.”

“You know… I should be mad about this. I really should. Honestly though, I just feel relieved. At least I know that I’m not weird or anything. I could have had dates in high school, but my two smitten, communication-deficient friends were cockblocking me.”

“So, you’re not mad?”

I walk over to my raven shifter. “No, I’m not mad.” I reach up like I’m going to hug him, then jab him in the arm as hard as I can.

“OW! What the hell? I thought you said you weren’t mad?”

“I’m not. But you deserved that. I’ll probably punch Felix too, when I see him.”

“Damn, Citrine. Maybe don’t punch Felix so hard. It might trigger his rage.”

“Don’t patronize me, Darius.”

“I’m serious, that hurt.” He’s rubbing his arm where I punched him. When he lifts his sleeve, there’s a bruise in the shape of my fist.

“Did you start working out or something? You’ve never hit me that hard before.”

“If by working out, you mean climbing to the top of the fridge to get my nugget jerky down, then yes.
